Where Is Your Money Sleeping Tonight?

Most of us know roughly how much money we have.

Far fewer of us know what it’s actually doing.

Your money is never just sitting there. When it’s in a bank, that bank is using it — to fund businesses, industries, and projects. The question is whether those things align with what you care about. Most of the time, we’ve never even asked.

This is what I call the “where is my money?” moment. And it’s one of the most powerful — and humbling — questions you can ask yourself.

Where Your Money Might Be Sleeping

If you’ve never done a full inventory, start here:

  • Cash accounts — checking, savings, CDs

  • Retirement accounts — 401(k), IRA, Roth IRA

  • Health or education accounts — HSA, 529

  • Brokerage accounts — stocks, ETFs, mutual funds

  • Real estate — home, rental property, inherited land

  • Alternative investments — crypto, commodities, private equity

Do you know which ones you’re in — and what those institutions are doing with your money?

The Values Question

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Many big banks use customer deposits to fund fossil fuels, private prisons, and weapons manufacturers. Many 401(k) plans are invested in industries that directly contradict what their owners believe in.

This isn’t about guilt. It’s about awareness — and the fact that once you see it, you have options.

Moving your checking account to a values-aligned bank, CDFI (community development financial institution), or a credit union. Rolling over an old 401(k) into a values-aligned IRA. Choosing an ESG fund over a default option.

None of these are small things. Each one is your money voting for the world you want to see.

You don’t have to overhaul everything today. You just have to start looking.
