The Three Stages of Financial Power — And Where You Are Right Now
Most women stop at earning. The powerful ones keep going.
I see it all the time. A woman builds a successful business or climbs the corporate ladder. She's making good money — maybe even great money. But then she stops there. She parks her earnings in a savings account, pays her bills, maybe splurges on a nice vacation. And that's it.
Here's what I want you to know: earning money is just the beginning. It's the entry point to financial power, not the destination.
Real financial power — the kind that changes your life, supports the causes you care about, and creates opportunities for other women — happens in stages. And most of us don't even know all three stages exist.
Stage One: The Earner
This is where we all start. You're building your own wealth through income streams — a salary, a business, freelance work, maybe a combination of all three. You're focused on making more, keeping more, and creating some breathing room in your budget.
This stage looks like:
Actively trading your time, skills, or expertise for money
Your primary financial question is "How can I earn more?"
Building an emergency fund and paying down debt
Your financial security depends on your ability to keep working
This stage is essential — you cannot skip it. But here's the trap: many women build impressive earning power and then plateau here. They keep working harder to earn more, but they never move their money into the next stage where it can multiply.
The Earner mindset: "I need to work to make money."
Stage Two: The Investor
This is where your money starts working for you. You're no longer just earning — you're building wealth that compounds over time, making strategic decisions about where to put your capital so it grows even while you sleep.
This stage looks like:
Money invested in markets, businesses, or assets beyond your primary income
Your primary financial question is "Where should I put this money to grow?"
Thinking about returns, risk, and long-term wealth building
Financial security increasingly tied to your assets, not just your income
Here's what's exciting: you don't need to be wealthy to start investing. You need to be intentional. I've seen women start with $100 a month and build significant portfolios over time. I've also seen women earn multiple six figures and keep it all in checking accounts, afraid to make a move.
The shift from Earner to Investor is often the hardest transition women make. It requires a different kind of financial education, a tolerance for uncertainty, and the confidence to put your money at risk in exchange for growth. But it's also the shift that changes everything.
The Investor mindset: "My money should make money."
Stage Three: The Influencer
This is where capital becomes power. At this stage, you're not just building personal wealth — you're using your financial resources to shape markets, communities, and causes you care about.
This stage looks like:
Your financial decisions influence where money flows
Your primary financial question is "What do I want to see more of in the world?"
Thinking about impact alongside returns
Your financial choices create opportunities for others
Here's what most people get wrong about this stage: they think you need to be a millionaire to have influence. Not true. I've watched women with $10,000 to invest join forces through giving circles and investment syndicates to fund women-led startups. I've seen donors with modest budgets make strategic philanthropic investments that unlock matching funds and change organizational trajectories.
Financial influence isn't about the size of your bank account. It's about the strategic use of whatever capital you have.
The Influencer mindset: "My money can change what's possible."
Where Are You Right Now?
You're primarily an Earner if:
Most of your financial energy goes into earning and managing income
You have little to no money invested outside of maybe a retirement account
You think of investing as something you'll do "when you have more"
Your giving is reactive rather than strategic
You're transitioning to Investor if:
You're regularly putting money into investment accounts
You're learning about different investment vehicles and strategies
You're curious about aligning your investments with your values
You're moving toward Influencer if:
You have significant capital already invested and growing
You're thinking strategically about philanthropic giving
You're interested in impact investing or angel investing
You're looking for ways to create systemic change with your resources
Most women I encounter are somewhere between Earner and Investor — making good money but haven't fully embraced the investor mindset. And that's okay. Awareness is the first step.
Why Women Often Stall Between Stages
I need to name something uncomfortable: women face real barriers moving through these stages that men often don't.
We're socialized to be careful with money, not bold. We're told to save, not invest. We're often shut out of the rooms where investment opportunities are shared. And when we do start investing, we face industries and advisors who talk down to us or assume we're less financially sophisticated than we are.
Add to that the pay gap, the caregiving responsibilities that still fall disproportionately on women, and the fact that many of us are building wealth without generational wealth behind us — and you can see why the journey from Earner to Influencer isn't always straightforward.
But the women who break through these barriers don't wait for perfect circumstances. They start where they are. They find other women on the same path. They educate themselves. They take calculated risks. And they keep moving forward.
Your Next Move
You don't have to jump from Earner to Influencer overnight. Each stage builds on the previous one. But you do need to know where you are and what comes next.
If you're an Earner: Start investing — even small amounts. Open that brokerage account. Get comfortable with the idea that your money can grow without your constant attention.
If you're an Investor: Clarify your values and start aligning your portfolio with what matters to you. Research impact investing. Consider where your capital could do more than just generate returns.
If you're approaching Influencer status: Get strategic. What do you want to see more of in the world? How can your capital — combined with your expertise and network — create that change?
Financial power isn't just about how much you have. It's about what you do with it. And the most powerful women I know are the ones who refuse to stop at earning.
They keep going.
